Church of the Birth of Mary

LOCATION:
Polhov Gradec

Polhov Gradec, situated in the heart of the Polhov Gradec Hills, where the rivulets Božna and Mala voda empty into the Gradaščica, is a village with a rich cultural history. It takes its name, translating as 'Dormouse Fort', from the Slovenian word for an Old Slavonic fortified settlement. The old village centre, which is still partially preserved, developed at the foot of the hill and next to the majestic 18th century Baroque Parish Church of St. Mary's Birth. The gilded 18th century Baroque main altar is a work by the Facijs, a local family of engravers.
